Airline-Approved Power Chairs

Traveling by air with a power chair can be a challenge. FAA regulations require the airlines to accommodate travelers who use mobility devices. Knowing what to expect in advance will make it easier when you're traveling.

If the chair is collapsible, and there is room, it may be stored in the cabin. Non-collapsible chairs are transported in the cargo area.

    Batteries

    • Southwest Airlines policy is that wet-cell batteries must be removed and transported in a battery box in accordance with FAA regulations. It is helpful for you to label the chair with battery type and removal instructions.
